My name is Jan Recker and I am Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Information Technology, Queensland University of Technology Brisbane. I do a lot of research in the area of user-centered analysis and design of process-oriented information systems, mostly around individual adoption and continuance of process specification standards. I am mostly recognized through my work around the process modeling standard BPMN. I also have done some research in the areas domain understanding, process flexibility and context-awareness, and recently I have developed an interest in the methodological aspects of Design Science research.
My teaching addresses the areas of Business Process Management, Process Modeling, Analysis and Improvement on the one hand, and Information Systems Development on the other hand.
More information about me can be found in the print-out version of my CV (status January 23, 2008) here.

Research interests and potential student topics

  • Organizational and Individual Adoption of Business Process Management standards

  • This project studies the organizational as well as the individual factors explaining acceptance, adoption and continued usage of standards (tools, methods, languages and specifications) for business process management. The aim of this project is to study empirically adoption of standards such as BPMN, BPEL, open-source workflow systems and so on. These studies may involve case studies, surveys, questionnaires and interviews largely.

  • Factors contributing to the development of domain understanding from process models

  • This project studies how individuals access and retrieve business information from process models depicted in typical languages such as EPC or BPMN. The aim of this study is to understand how people can better develop process models, to understand the skills required to read such models, and how different labeling styles and graphical designs can contribute to understandings. These studies may involve design work as well as experiments.

  • Factors explaining and predicting feature-centric use of BPM tools

  • This project studies the use of features of BPM tools available on the market (such as modeling features, reporting, simulation, analysis, or execution). The aim of this project is to uncover the most essential tool features in a BPM software and how and why these features are widely used while other, potentially advanced, features largely remain unused. These studies may involve analyses of tools and features as well as empirical studies of actual tool usage.

  • Critical success factors of process management and improvement projects

  • This project studies business process managemen/improvement projects in business organizations. The aim of this project is to study why these projects are sometimes successful and sometimes not. The aim is to elicit the factors that help projects to become successful as well as to uncover the factors that impede BPM success. These studies may involve case studies of organizations, surveys, questionnaires and interviews largely.
Current and future students are welcome to contact me via email if they are interested in doing Honours, Masters or PhD research in these or related areas.
