So how did I get here, from where I started?
My original undergraduate training, meant I was a qualified Librarian, with a Library major, a Psychology major, and a Computer Science minor. In the late 1970's, I worked in numerous libraries, including casual work in the RMIT Library , and at the University of Melbourne as the Chemistry Branch Librarian , then as their Reference Librarian and Loans Desk Supervisor in the University's Brownless Medical Library .
I left Australia in early 1981, living in London for nearly 3 years, traveling around Europe and Scandinavia, whenever possible. My daugther was born during this time. After returning from London, via the USA, I moved to Perth, Western Australia in early 1983. I lived there for 4 years, and my son was born during this period. I also decided to leave the library world at this time and moved into sales and marketing using my other undergraduate major.
Moving to Melbourne again in early 1987, and using my psychology training, I worked in sales and marketing for approximately 3 years with Cottee's, the food division of Cadbury Schweppes. After a few years in "left field" I decided Librarianship wasn't so bad after all and returned to work in the Monash University Biomedical Library (now the Hargrave-Andrew Library ) in late 1989.
Returning to the library world in the late 1980's was fortuitous, as that was when AARnet was established. So in a nutshell, being a very computer literate librarian (ie: my computer science minor), I found working with UNIX and VAX commands on the Internet easy! As it was easy for me, I was quickly asked to teach other librarians and academics at the university, how to use the Internet. This started my career as both an Information Consultant and Internet Trainer at Monash University Library, working within the MONINFO (Monash Information Service) section.
Moving to Queensland in 1995, I began working at the University of Queensland 's UQL Pathways as a part-time Internet Trainer, and at the same time began as a Part-time Academic at QUT's School of Information Systems. In early 1996 I was successful in my application to be appointed to my first permanent position at QUT as an Associate Lecturer, in the School of Information Systems, Faculty of Information Technology.
I was promoted, in 1999, to Lecturer in the School of Information Systems, and promoted again in 2005 to Senior Lecturer. Fiannly I was appointed as Assistant Dean - Teaching & Learning in Dec. 2006. During that time I have worked on upgrading my qualifications; with a Masters (by research) a Graduate certificate in Education (Higher Ed.), and finally my PhD. So that's it! That's how I got here, from there!
